March new releases
This month sees the release of five new ‘books with spine’ by Melbourne University Publishing, with two luxe hardbacks and three new little books on big ideas.
It’s publication day today and we’re delighted to introduce you to our latest releases!
Kindred tells the untold love story of eco-tourism pioneers Gustav Weindorfer and Kate Cowle. With stunning photography throughout, Kindred traces the achievements of these unconventional adventurers and their fight to preserve the wilderness of Cradle Mountain—now world heritage-listed. While neither lived to see their vision fully realised, Nikki Gemmell writes that this book ‘brings to light a hidden tale of Australia’s wilderness and unearths a love story of daring unconventionality in the process.’
Our ‘On’ series continues to thrive in 2019 with pressing topics explored by the very best voices in current affairs and social commentary. In On Violence, Natasha Stott Despoja declares violence against women a national emergency: it is preventable. It is not an inevitable part of the human condition. It's time to create a new normal. It is time to stop the slaughter in our suburbs.
With Australia’s national broadcaster ‘Aunty’ about to turn 90, media veteran Jonathan Holmes explores what is next for the ABC in On Aunty. He writes: ‘like democracy itself, the ABC may not be perfect, but in an age of disintegrating consensus, it is far better than the alternative.’
In On Father, beloved author John Birmingham pays homage to his late father. A unique yet universal story, this little book reaches out to everyone who has experienced and survived deep grief.
In The Blackburns, Carolyn Rasmussen rescues another progressive couple, Maurice and Doris Blackburn, from the footnotes of history. This book celebrates the achievements of an ambitious couple who worked as elected members of parliaments and community activists, influencing conscription laws, benefits for working men and women, atomic bomb tests, civil rights and Indigenous recognition. Together, they shook Australia.
With every title we release, we keenly share the moments our books and authors are in the media. On each book’s webpage you can find the latest interviews, extracts, podcasts, television programs and more. Stay tuned for more!
